As we celebrate 100 years of Stoke-on-Trent with Love Stoke 100, here are five famous people who proudly hail from our city.
Sir Stanley Matthews – A true footballing legend, Sir Stanley Matthews was born in Hanley and became one of the greatest footballers of all time. Known as 'The Wizard of the Dribble,' his incredible career saw him play for Stoke City and Blackpool, winning the first- ever Ballon d'Or in 1956.
Clarice Cliff – One of the most influential ceramic artists of the 20th century, Clarice Cliff revolutionized pottery design with her bold and colorful Bizarre ware. Born in Tunstall, her work remains highly collectible and continues to define the artistic heritage of Stoke-on- Trent.
Robbie Williams – One of Britain’s biggest pop icons, Robbie Williams was born in Burslem and rose to fame as part of Take That before launching a hugely successful solo career. With hits like Angels and Rock DJ, he remains one of the UK’s best-selling artists of all time.
Neil Baldwin – Known for his incredible life story, Neil Baldwin is a Stoke legend who overcame challenges to become a circus clown, football kit man for Stoke City, and honorary graduate of Keele University. His story was immortalized in the BAFTA-winning film Marvellous.
Reginald Mitchell – The man behind one of the most iconic aircraft in history, Reginald Mitchell, born in Butt Lane, designed the Supermarine Spitfire. His innovative engineering played a vital role in the success of the RAF during World War II.
